tanya asked for this in the start here thread so here it is. 2013 altima 2.5 S, QR25DE, the jatco cvt, bought it in february 2015 from a rental fleet at 41,000 miles for 11,400. it rolled 302,480 on thursday on the way back from vicksburg. i sell industrial fasteners to plants between here and hattiesburg, so it is all two lane and interstate and almost no city.

here is the whole list out of the shoebox, big stuff only.

  • cvt at 171,000. remanufactured jatco unit at an independent transmission shop in pearl, 3,450 out the door with fluid and a cooler they added. that was the only time i thought about getting rid of it.
  • front wheel bearing right side at 198,000, left at 221,000, about 280 each with labor.
  • struts and shocks all four at 190,000, 740.
  • alternator at 243,000, 390.
  • ac compressor and drier at 257,000, 810. you do not drive a car in mississippi with no ac, that is not a repair you can put off.
  • radiator at 262,000, 395, it started seeping at the plastic tank seam like they all do.

plus four sets of tires, three batteries and two windshields, both from gravel coming off log trucks on 49.

what it does now. it burns a quart about every 2,200 miles and has since somewhere around 230,000, so i carry a case in the trunk. there is a chain rattle for about two seconds on a cold start that showed up at 280,000 and i am not opening that engine at this mileage. everything else works, including the window switches, which i did not expect.

the one thing i would do differently. the dealer talked me out of a cvt fluid change at 60,000 because the schedule in the manual on nissanusa.com says inspect, not replace. i had it changed at 90, 120 and 150 after that and it still let go at 171. i think the first one mattered and i will never know.

3,450 for a transmission in a car worth maybe 4,500 is the exact thing that keeps me from buying anything with a cvt. you had the money and you spent it because the rest of the car was good. a lot of people in that spot walk away and the car goes to the auction.

asking honestly and not to argue: at 171,000 did it go all at once, or did you get a warning? my wife needs a car in the next month and every reliable thing in her price range has a belt and pulleys in it.

i turn wrenches at a toyota store in charlotte, so discount my brand opinions accordingly, but the QR25 is a known quantity in every shop. two things show up: it uses oil after about 200,000, which you have, and the chain guides get noisy on cold start, which you also have. neither one is a reason to do anything to a car at 302,000 except keep the oil above the low mark.

the part of your post people should copy is the receipts. when a customer hands me a folder i can tell them whether to spend 1,200 on a car. when they tell me the last owner "did everything" i am guessing, and my guess costs them money.

reading this from western new york where the engine is never what kills the car. my last altima was a 2012 and it had a perfectly good motor in it when the shop would not put it back on the lift at 183,000, rear subframe mounting area was gone. the state inspector here fails you for rust through on anything structural and he is right to.

so 302,000 is a southern number. up here a car that sees road salt from november to april is on borrowed time at 150. the brake lines go first, then the fuel lines, then the body mounts.

just came off a twelve and i am sitting in the parking garage reading this instead of driving home, which is a habit i should break.

2016 sentra sv, 141,000, original cvt, and i am the one who is supposed to be scared of these. i have had the fluid done at 30, 60, 90 and 120 at an independent that uses the nissan fluid and charges me 190 for it. no shudder, no whine. my miles are easy though, 30,000 a year and most of it is the 101 at two in the morning with nobody on it.

in phoenix the thing that actually dies on schedule is the battery. two and a half years, every time, no warning. i keep the receipt because the warranty is prorated and i have used it twice.

i added your list up because that is what i do. 6,065 in big repairs over the 261,000 miles you have put on it, which is 2.3 cents a mile. people pay more than that for an extended warranty that would have argued with them about the compressor.

what i want from you is fuel. do you have a lifetime average, or just the shoebox? a 2.5 altima on two lane roads at 60 should be doing better than the epa number and i never see anyone post real figures for one.

fuel, since you asked. i do not keep a spreadsheet but i write the gallons on the receipt and i went through two years of them last night. 28.4 average, and the hattiesburg run on 49 with the cruise at 68 gives me 31.2 pretty consistently. it got 26 when it was new and had the original tires on it, so either the engine loosened up or i slowed down. probably i slowed down.

to answer cvt_doubter from a few weeks back, since i did not: no warning i could feel. it drove normal on a tuesday, and on wednesday it had a flare between about 35 and 45 like it could not decide on a ratio, and by friday it would not hold a hill. four days from fine to done. if your wife's car has records showing fluid changes i would not be afraid of it. if it has no records i would price a transmission before i bought it and decide if i could eat that.

next car is no car. i am going to 400,000 or until the body gives up, whichever comes first.
